To
BBQ or Not to BBQ?
There are numerous studies that can be found by a quick
search on Google that warns of the damage barbecue
cooking can do to your food.
So, how do you enjoy your barbecue?
Researchers at a National Laboratory in California
found that low heat combined with frequent flipping of
hamburgers, for example, at 158°F,
eliminated bacteria and the potential of illness caused
by bacterium E.coli. At the same time, dangerous
compounds that high temperature cooking can cause are
reduced.
This is a much lower temperature than the standard 350°
F, which can actually damage the molecular structure of
the food. Studies found the ideal temperature for oven
cooked foods is 225°F,
or better yet, use a slow cooker on the low setting.
Your food can cook while you enjoy other activities.
Note that food, which normally takes one hour to cook
at 350°F
will require one and a half hours at 225°F.
So, prepare a fresh salad and cook what you need to
cook at a lower temperature, for the appropriate amount
of time – and treat yourself to food that not only
tastes like summer but is good for your health.
