There’s More to Healthy Eating than Nutritious Food
Choosing nutritious foods is the first step to
providing your body with the fuel it needs. Preparing
them without losing their nutrient value is the next
step. But all of that effort is wasted if you just eat
on the run or bite and swallow the food.
Sitting down, taking time to chew and savour your food
in a friendly environment is an essential step in
providing your body with optimal nutrition.
If you recently had an argument, are in a hurry, or
you’re replaying an unpleasant past event or berating
yourself for an oversight, you’re compromising your
body’s ability to digest the food that you chose so
wisely and carefully prepared. All that effort is
wasted unless you are in a peaceful frame of mind and
have allocated adequate time to consume your food.
A brisk walk for ten minutes before you eat will
speed up your metabolism. And if you can get away
before your lunch at your place of work, it will clear
your mind and make the afternoon seem like a fresh new
day.
Sitting quietly after you eat and thinking happy
thoughts, perhaps recalling things for which you are
grateful will help you digest your meal. We can’t
always indulge in a “siesta,” but if we could we’d
provide our body with the ideal environment for
digestion.
The family dinner, almost a thing of the past, is an
ideal time to recall happy events of the day, putting
you and the entire family in a mood that’s conducive
for optimal digestion. Allowing the children to help
you prepare the evening meal is a great way to create
quality time together while listening about the events
of their day. It is also a good way to begin the
process of teaching them about preparing and consuming
nutritious foods before they have to dash off to an
evening event or begin their homework.
Treasure the time you spend nourishing your body and
providing it with the fuel it needs to power you
through your busy life.
